Alocasia Plant Description
Alocasias are plants that effortlessly bring the jungle vibes to your space, with over 97 different varieties to choose from. Also known as elephant ears, these tropical beauties are highly sought after by plant collectors and can be found enhancing indoor and outdoor spaces worldwide.
Common Challenges with Alocasias
One common issue with Alocasias is their susceptibility to bacterial or fungal leaf spot infections. These plants thrive in humidity, but constantly wet leaves combined with factors like temperature and airflow can create the perfect conditions for infections to develop. To prevent this, avoid splashing water on the leaves and provide humidity in alternative ways.
Another common issue is leaf tip burn, which can be avoided by using water that has been left uncovered for at least 24 hours instead of fresh tap water.
Planting, Growing, and Caring for Alocasia
Light: Place your Alocasia in medium to bright indirect light. While some varieties can tolerate brief periods of direct sunlight, it's best to avoid it as it can lead to dark markings or thinning foliage. Water: Water your plant weekly or when the top 2" of soil feels dry. The soil should be kept moist but not soggy. In the winter, allow the soil to dry out more between waterings. Feeding: Use diluted plant food once a month in the spring and summer, but refrain from feeding in the fall and winter when the plant is dormant. Toxicity: Alocasias are toxic if ingested, so keep them out of reach of pets and children.
This striking Alocasia features metallic green and red-toned leaves with deeply-ridged, glossy foliage that is sure to catch the eye. Native to southeast Asia, this plant thrives in warm temperatures and frequent watering.
Sunlight: Medium to bright indirect light Water: Once a week, allowing the top 2" of soil to dry Pets: Not safe for pets Care: Suitable for intermediate plant parents Pro-tip: Use a pebble tray to boost humidity levels
